HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT CAREER OPTION? A SIMPLIFIED GUIDE

Itโ€™s a very common question that has passed through all our minds, maybe once, twice maybe a hundred or a thousand times.

The question about:-

How to know which branch is best for us?

What is the perfect time to decide what is right for us?

How to know what interests us and how to know what is right for us?

There are millions of questions and maybe thousand of approaches to all these questions.

I am here to talk about these in the simplest way possible to help you out.

The 1st and foremost thing to know is โ€œEVERYONE IS DIFFERENT.โ€

If you can, just get this imprinted into your brains. Everything starts from this single thought.

You may be someone, who is sure about exactly what they want to do and achieve in life, to be very honest, these people are real legends and if you are one of them, I would not even suggest you read this article further. You are sorted. Go and work for it, get it.

But I believe most people including me donโ€™t fall into this category.

Many of us even till late ages have no idea about what we exactly want to do and what makes us happy. There is nothing inherently wrong with not having that clarity, it’s just that eventually this clouding of thoughts can creep in and may start making you anxious. So better try to detangle it at the earliest.

I am going to discuss here some ways that may help you find out your right path. This is completely based on my observations and experiences.

Try to start thinking early.

You can make your passion into your profession

The world is not limited, nor are the options.

Pick up the signals

  1. Try to start thinking early.

This involves two aspects, one of the kid and the other of the parents.

For the kid, I am not saying that you should become serious and grow up or let go of your childhood. Nothing of that sort. You should not do that at all. All I am saying is start having your own thoughts. Try new things. Try whatever field interests you, whatever it may be. Today you like how the world is made, grab a book on that. You think you want to sing for life, learn it, perform, follow the lives of the ones who are doing it. You love cooking, get it done. Science interests you, read more out of your course.

Try to explore your choices, donโ€™t just blindly follow what  you have been told to, once you start understanding things.

For the parents, nowadays the scenario is getting better, but still, particularly in Indian households, we see that many parents try to decide everything about their kid for as long as possible. That is where you stop the kid to develop the ability to think. Listen to them, encourage them to have choices, support them. Donโ€™t stop them until theyโ€™re getting into something harmful or destructive.

Get out of the illusion of โ€œOnly doctors, engineers, IAS and lawers can have a good life โ€

2. You can make your passion into your profession.

Keep it clear in your mind that in today’s world, you can have an earning job with almost any talent that you can develop.

If you are academically well, you can get a job. If you are good at arts, you can earn.

You just have to be good.

Thatโ€™s the only criteria to achieve things in your life. So try not to kill your passion so that you can adjust yourself to the so-called elite-sounding professions. Go for it only if you want it.

3. The world is not limited, nor are the options.

We usually end up living in auto mode. We are consciously or subconsciously were been fed with the data of what are we going to become. Many of the parents setting this mode for their kids donโ€™t even realize what they are doing.

Praising just the ideas of a few professions, ignoring the others. Always giving examples of doctors, IITians, and IAS while talking of success and pride.

Quoting an example:-

You will commonly hear these words like, โ€œMera beta bada hokar doctor banegaโ€.

And when told that you donโ€™t like biology, the track changes to โ€œOk, no problem, you can take IIT or do engineering and then prepare for IAS.โ€

By saying these things, the parent assumes that they are being liberal to their kids by letting them not take medicine, which they wanted to, but the point they don’t realize is that still they are pushing the kid into a subject that they chose. Out of 100+ opportunities the blinders they put on the kid will make the kid see just the 3 options they fed into him. This way, the kid may never realize what his actual potential is and what he actually would want to do.

4. Pick up the signals

  • If you love reading about the human body,

Medicine and its allied courses (M.B.B.S., B.D.S., B. Pharma, B.Physiotherapy, B.A.M.S., B.H.M.S., B.U.M.S., B.A.S.L.P., B. Occupational therapy, paramedical courses like Radiotherapy, Nursing, etc),

BSc in biology or related subjects, if you want then can go for masters and Ph.D., join schools or universities as professors

All these can give you opportunities in research as well.

  • If you are attracted by the mechanisms and theories of physics, engineering would be the best choice for you, but that doesnโ€™t mean you can’t take a bachelor’s and master’s degree in the field to start as a professor or a researcher.
  • The same goes with chemistry. Your interest in chemical structures and enjoying the reactions. Your love for the bonds and variety of compounds that exist and you finding the complex formula simpler may be a sign of your interest in the subject.

But these are the fields anyways were offered by our parents to choose from. What we need to understand is the world apart from this.

  • What if you love to write essays or enjoy the writing section of your paper, which most of your classmates hate. What if you can write applaudable speeches or write articles to awe your faculty, what if you love how the stories and poetries are written and just can’t help fall for the authors while reading them.

I am not saying this will define your career, but why not consider taking literature for your graduation. You might end up enjoying it more than if you take sciences. You may become a professor who can make other students fall in love with literature too. Who knows you may become a great author, poet, or lyricist after you travel deeply through literature.

  • Similarly, if you love discussing and dealing with monetary aspects. Interested in business, profit, and all that, commerce is waiting for you.
  • If you are a creative person, consider artistic branches like fine arts, music, dance, fashion designing, interior designing, architecture, etc.

Keep yourself open-minded for all the options and try reading yourself as much as possible. Knowing yourself is most important because till you’ll not, others will keep leading your life thinking theirsโ€™.

Because somehow, this ends up deciding how happy will you be for your life.

Before ending, I would like to tell you all one more thing, which may seem clichรฉ, but is very important. It’s never too late to start living your life as you want it.

Your ways may be different, your path may be the one, no one had traveled through. It may be harder or easier than others. But both the path and the destination will be yours.
